Dear Families,

Here is some of what Rm 24 has been up to:

Math

For math, we’ve been doing a bit of a multiplication and division workshop – practicing efficient and effective strategies to work toward memorization. We’ve continued our independent work in the Learn and Practice books. Homework can be continued in the Success books which remain at home. They are welcome/encouraged to tear out any completed pages and turn them into me.

Writing

For writing, we have been practicing the skill of “showing, not telling” with our words. Instead of just reporting on events, we’ve been practicing using descriptive language to paint pictures of scenes for our readers. Daily prompts alternate between narrative, opinion, and informative. Inspired by the love of our daily read aloud of Wayside School, the students are writing their own “Sideways Stories from Room 24.” I’ve asked them to bring their journals home daily to work on these for homework. Ask them to share them with you!

ELA/Science

The ELA unit on the human body continues as we learn about cells, tissue, and body systems. The focus is on thinking critically, reading, and writing about our findings. Also for Science, we will begin our unit on the lifecycle of a butterfly and after spring break, we’ll observe real caterpillars as they progress through the cycle into Painted Lady butterflies. The unit will conclude with setting them free in the wildlands with Farmer Adam where there are plants that Painted Ladies make their habitats.
