Dear families,
We have begun Module 10 of CKLA Knowledge, focused on the Human Body.
Last week, we supplemented this with Bill Nye's related video on the topic, and students wrote about what they read.
For math, students are working in the LEARN books. Most have shared that they know some or all of their times tables, so I've given them the 3rd grade FLUENCY books, as well, and have been teaching them the multiplication tricks that I teach my tutoring students. They are picking them up QUICKLY!
Inspired by their command of multiplication, their work with place value, and the social studies unit on goods and consumers, today, we started a project where students are working collaboratively in pairs/groups to create, market, and sell a product.
1. Each group decides on a product. They discuss where the materials would come from in the real workd and who is involved in the entire lifecycle of the product.
2. Who will be your consumers, and how will you add value to their lives?
3. On a piece of posterboard, place a prototype (or representation of a prototype), a company logo, and an advertisement.
4. Your product must cost $10 and be shipped in packages of 10. Each package of 10 will go into a shipping create that holds 10 sets of 10 (so 100).
5. Choose from 4-9 stores that will submit orders for the product. I will give students various additional quantities that they will need to fill over the course of multiple days.
6. Students will have to figure out how many products to produce of each size and version and how many to ship out to the various stores -- and, of course, the amount of money owed.
For science, Ms. Lima and I connected. She's also interested in the butterfly kit. There are Foss lessons and a garden tie-in.
For writing, I'm having the students write to a prompt in their journals. We've been focused on creating paragraphs, following a particular format. I'd like to move into CKLA's research writing unit. I'm confirming with Ms. Lima where her class is with that.
Mr. V
